The university has always differentiated itself from other four-year universities through its emphasis on relationships. While academic excellence has been an underlying strength, the person-to-person relationships fostered by faculty toward students have created lasting bonds to the university. Traditional students in particular are extremely loyal to the university citing the personal attention they received from their professors as instrumental to their success. A large part of the student population has been from rural communities. The education they receive from A&M-Commerce (formerly East Texas State among several other names) has helped broaden their perspectives from that of rural backgrounds and equipped them with relevant and well-respected degrees that have given them confidence to successfully compete in the marketplace. A&M-Commerce also has a large and growing non-traditional student population were new media and on-line programs are designed to meet the unique needs of students who have full time jobs, families and busy schedules who want to continue their education or pursue graduate degrees. With affordable, convenient and innovative distance learning opportunities the university is able to deliver to non-traditional students the same high quality education and personalized attention traditional students enjoy. Regardless of the method of delivery, whether on campus or on line, A&M-Commerce has remained true to its heritage of providing the highest quality education with the personal attention necessary for each student to succeed and be confident in their respective fields of study.
